Uh, I'm an abject failure!

I'm running Helios (yes, the latest update thereof if that makes any
difference). Yes, I have Subclipse installed too. I'm just trying to
improve my life.

I've tried installing EGit from Help -> Install New Software. When I
attempt to add the path, http://download.eclipse.org/egit/updates, it
says it's a duplicate. Fine. So I click on Available Software Sites,
scroll down to the path (I see it listed) and I check the box.
Thereafter, it remains checked when I visit that place and it's at the
top of the list. I click Reload; it says I can connect with no problem.

But, this doesn't give me a Git folder when I do File -> Import...

So, I tried Help -> Check for Updates, but EGit wasn't an available
update (so, it's already there?). I check all over Help -> About Eclipse
-> Installation Details. There's so much there, I guess I could have
missed it, but I see nothing Git-related.

In any case, I seem unable to do anything except consume Git from my
Linux command line.

I'm here at the fountain, my friends. Please help me drink.

Profuse thanks!

Ah, hold on. Eclipse Marketplace seems to be more help than (what's been
for me) the usual way.

Just as an answer to your first question: The "duplicate" message only means, that you have already defined an updatesite with that url, but not, that you have the plugins installed. So it seems, that you only would have had to select that update site in the "Install new software" wizard and install EGit and JGit.

I had this same problem but was able to resolve it.

What is happening is the Eclipse knows about the EGit plugin site (so you can't add it again) but the site is disabled for updates (so you can't get Egit, and can't search for it in the update lists). This is quite a usability design flaw if you ask me.

You can solve it by doing the following (note: values shown onscreen are shown in bold):

1) From the Eclipse main menu choose: Help > Install New Software ...

Result: the Install dialog box is shown.

2) Click on the Available Software Sites preferences link near the top right of the dialog box (just under the Add... button).

Result: The Preferences dialog is shown at the Install/Update > Available Software Sites page.

3) In the type filter text box type in egit

Result: The listbox on the right shows the Egit plugn (with Name Eclipse Git Plugin Update Site).

4) If the checkbox to the left of the plugin name is not checked then the update site is disabled. Ensure the checkbox is checked (that is, check it if you have to).

5) Click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.

Result: The Preferences dialog box changes.

6) In the Install dialog box type in egit in the type filter text box.

Result: The Available Software list box will show the following plugins as being available:
* Eclipse Git Team Provider, and
* JGit

You can now install these normally (that is, select them, click Next > and allow the update to proceed).

I hope this helps - and while your question may be that of a new user, it is still a bad interface design whereby Eclipse update sites are known to Eclipse but not shown as being disabled (hence, it is not obvious why the update can't proceed)>
