in org.eclipse.wst.xmleditor outline view, by right clicking on an
element, the list of valid content is shown. i presume that it's read from
the xsd grammar linked to the document. is it related to org.eclipse.xsd
library? are there methods that provide default valid contents for an
element given the associated schema? which?

Tommaso,

I've been on vacation so I'm slow to respond. I'm not sure if the XML
editor is using the XSD model or not. It's best to ask on the WTP
newsgroup, which I've added to the "to" list of the reply.

If there is an XSD associated with the XML file through either a XML
Catalog or through the schemaLocation attribute, it will use the XSD
model from EMF.
