Question about using Indigo to open a 'Helios' workspace [message #692965]

The other day I downloaded Eclipse Indigo C/C++ Version. I've been
ussing Helios for about a year, and whatever was before Helios for a
while too. I'm on Windows 7 profession 64bit but using 32bit Java and
Eclipse.

I closed down Helios then started Indigo and pointed it at the
workspace I'd been using with Helios. This was really just to take a
look at Helios as I haven't got time at the moment to fully convert to
Indigo (probably) due to concern over potential down-time if some of
the plug-ins I have installed have incompatibilities.

Anyway - I had a look, closed it down then restarted my Helios install
but, instead of being as it was the last time I tried it, it showed
the "welcome" screen and a load of my settings had disappeared (e.g.
PyDev interpreter, file name patterns and history in "Search", a
couple of projects that were located in other folders rather than just
in the workspace folder etc).

I'd zipped up my workspace before trying this just in case but even
restoring the zipped version didn't help.

Can anyone tell me why this happened? As long as I can understand why
then I might have another go at doing something like this because I
should at least understand the easy way to get back to where I was.

If there's any additional information you need to help me please feel
free to ask.

Hello, John.

It is a very bad idea to do what you did. This is because one version of Eclipse can make incompatible changes to the worksplace. For this reason you should have made a copy of your worksplace before testing the new version. Keep it in mind for the future.

I believe that having different plugins installed is also a potential source of problems.

Thanks for that Jose.

One thing I pointed out though was that I did make a copy of the
workspace in case of this happening but when I restored the Workspace
to its previous form, there were still differences in the
configuration of Eclipse. It seems to me that there are some hidden
configuration settings somewhere that must've been overwritten which
is rather disappointing.

If I knew where those were held it might help me. I can't see anything
obvious under c:\users\<me> and it would obviously not make sense for
those to be in c:\EclipseIndigo\.. as that's shared.
