The LDT proposal was withdrawn
(http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/eclipse-ldt/index.html) and thus the
newsgroup was removed.

Any details as to why the proposal was withdrawn? Was it a technical or
business decision? Is there any analysis of the work of this project to
date? To those of us interested in supporting various languages with
Eclipse, that would be good information.

Are there any plans for something to replace this project or for it to
be resubmitted? I was surprised to see this withdrawn after BEA made
such an impressive presentation at EclipseCon, see
http://www.eclipsecon.org/2005/presentations/EclipseCon2005_ 14.4EnhancingLanguageSupport.pdf

Just before the LDT newsgroup vanished, BEA posted an announcement.
Essentially it said that most of the goals of the project (at least,
BEA's goals) were going to be satisfied by other projects.

I replied with the same question: How about retargeting the project
toward some of the more interesting ideas that came up in the newsgroup,
like Chris Laffra's idea of wizard-generated editor plug-ins, that went
by the wayside?

Then the newsgroup vanished. ;-}

I guess to go any further someone will have to make a new proposal to
the board.

PS Cross-posting sucks. I removed eclipse.foundation from this reply.

The LDT newsgroup was archived. I found this post which describes why
BEA decided to withdraw the proposal. I hope this helps.

I would love to see a group of people work around the topic of enabling
better add-a-new-language support in Eclipse. But it takes a leader to
make that happen, so we're currently waiting for a leader to step up and
say "yes, I'd like to spend a bit of my time coordinating the
conversations and seeing where we could go". There are many people on
the "interested observer and commenter" fence around this topic, but we
have yet to find someone who has the time, the will, and the technical
savvy to lead the project to success.

We could open a newsgroup for language conversations, but we all have to
be aware that it's just going to be a cocktail party conversation
without a leader...

Any ideas?
