Hello,

my name is Christian Kerl. I'm currently a student at the TU Munich, Germany.

I'd like to apply for GSoC 2011 with the idea "EMF - ProtocolBuffer EMF Serialization" [see http://wiki.eclipse.org/Google_Summer_of_Code_2011_Ideas#EMF _-_ProtocolBuffer_EMF_Serialization ].

There is at the moment no mentor mentioned, is there anyone interested in mentoring this project?

I'd like to discuss and detail the idea and the scope of the project before handing in my application.

Best regards,
Christian

For everyone interested: the proposal has been accepted and is now an official GSoC 2011 project.

You can follow the development over the next month on: https://christiankerl.wordpress.com/

Did you ask to get part of the http://planeteclipse.org/planet/
aggregator? This makes it easier to follow your progress.

I should propose this to all GSoC-Students so I'll send a mail to the
soc-mailinglist?

I didn't ask yet to get part of planeteclipse.org. But Wayne Beaton proposed it already on the soc-dev mailing list ( http://dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/soc-dev/msg01603.html ). So every Eclipse GSoC student should be aware of this possibility.

This is really a cool project and adds valuable "standard" binary
serialization to EMF. Is there a roadmap to make this an official
Eclipse project or to integrate it into EMF?

Cheers,
Hauke

One of my results was that the Protocol Buffer implementation is not more space or time efficient than the existing BinaryResourceImpl (see christiankerl.wordpress.com/2011/07/21/benchmarking-protobufresourceimpl/ for details). So, if you want just efficient storage use BinaryResourceImpl. But if you are looking to exchange data from EMF models with any of the other languages supported by Protocol Buffers you should use the EMF Protocol Buffer implementation.
