No more Sun Java in Ubuntu, which Java to use with Eclipse? [message #649111] Mon, 17 January 2011 12:38 Go to next message

As a new Eclipse user on Kubuntu 10.10, I found this important thread:
http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php?t=msg&th=161212& amp;start=0&S=1df82ee243e19a7de2cb0ff2df039bf0

The recommended Java install, sun-jdk-*, no longer exists in the Ubuntu repos:
$ aptitude search jdk | grep sun
$ aptitude search java | grep sun
p libsunflow-java - rendering system for photo-realistic image
p libsunflow-java-doc - rendering system for photo-realistic image
p sun-javadb-client - Java DB client
p sun-javadb-common - Java DB common files
p sun-javadb-core - Java DB core
p sun-javadb-demo - Java DB demo
p sun-javadb-doc - Java DB documentation
p sun-javadb-javadoc - Java DB javadoc
$

Should I go ahead an use the gcj java, or should I switch to the openjdk Java?

Thanks!

In my opinion, you shouldn't worry about what JRE you're using for your
computer host. Always download and point Eclipse at a Sun JDK (JRE) that
doesn't change. That way, your host-wide JRE can be updated as desired
and appropriate while the one Eclipse runs on is always and only the one
you decide yourself.

The Sun jdk is available in the Ubuntu repos. You need to enable
partner repos to pick it up. Here is a link with instructions.

Hi

Just download any Sun/Oracle JDK and install it in /opt. Then fiddle a
bit with alternatives and /etc/environment and you are done. Besides the
original JDK it gives you indepnendency from the Ubuntu release plan. I
never had an issue with a Sun JDK on Ubuntu for about five years now.

Thanks, David, that link was just what I needed. I do prefer to use my distro's available repos instead of downloading everything from the original project's homepage.

Have a great evening!
