Hi Holger,
thanks for your feedback. Although we started with the UI technologies given, the final discussion indeed is not yet made. We are planning to re-evaluate this within the next months, as we found that Vaadin is not always the perfect match for our use cases. Our challenge is that we need both: really fast, simple, low-footprint rendering on one hand, and easy to use, feature rich fancy widgets for some pages on the other hand. It might be possible that we'll have to continue following a dual strategy, but maybe we find a better way.
I have to admit that it's quite some time ago since I last had a look into RAP, so there indeed are really good chances that things have changed since then. So I absolutely agree that RAP being an Eclipse project makes it a really good candidate and we will include it in our considerations. However, I would rather fancy having an open discussion on that topic before actually commiting to a technology. It's good to know that you would be interested in that and I hope we can count on you once we need a RAP expert when looking into it and building a small prototype.

I would be very interested in pushing RAP as a frontend technology for
Skalli. If you want we can meet (remote or real in Waldorf/Karlsruhe
(?)) and I can show you some things about RAP. So, please add me as an
interested party.

Thats exactly where we are now. Regarding the footprint I would suggest
that you will make yourself an opinion. Go to
http://rap.eclipsesource.com and watch it via Firebug. You wil see that
only about 290KB will send over to the client until the Workbench has
fuly started. And the cool thing about this is, that if RAP is once
loaded, all Widgets are on the client. So creating, deleting and
controling widgets are realy cheap and fast operations ;)

JFYI: The RAP Widget Toolkit (the toolkit with the SWT API) can be used
standalone. So, you are not coupled to the workbench. You will find
more information about this here:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/RAP/FAQ#How_do_I_use_a_RWT_standalon e_application_in_Tomcat
