Hi to all,

we implemented this feature called E.D. (Eclipse Distributor) for our company to have the possibility to handle more developer-groups with different needs of how eclipse is configured. We could imagine to contribute this complete feature as a opensource eclipse-project.
Please answer if you have needs for such a part of software and what we have to do to get part of eclipse.
Following a short descriptions of the already implemented features (many other features are planned):

The distributor is a eclipse-feature which can be used to define preconfigured distributions. For example, if you want to offer a Eclipse with a company-codestyle, a preconfigured findbugs and your cvs-repositories installed, you can use director to automatically build them.

The main features are currently (more features are planned in the future):
- Define different distributions for different recipients and different operationsystems
- Editor to define the parts of distributions
- Define one base-distribution per distribution to download
- Define any number of plugins per distribution to be added (using p2 - director)
- Define any number of additional settings per distribution automatically installed or installed after clicking on a menuentry in mainmenu.
- Define any number of additional preconfigurations per distribution like initial memory-settings in eclipse.ini
- Derive distributions from another distribution. So if you need a base-distribution A and one distribution B with additional plugins or settings you can derive them, what means that you have to define the parts which are contained in any distribution only once
- Automatically create an inhouse-mirror according to the model to avoid dependencies to internet (using b3 aggregator)
- Upload mirror and distributions on a ftp-server you can configure
- Call building of distributions headless. You can use hudson or any other buildserver
- Preconfigure cvs-repositories, codeformatting, encoding, editorpreferences, all available jdks from one basedirectory, checkstyle, savections. proxysettings

Wish you merry christmas

Markus

I think there would be some interest in this type of functionality, but
sounds like it is so closely related to p2 or perhaps even
b3.aggregator, that perhaps you should ask if those projects would be
interested in having the effort as part of those specific projects. You
know ... flock with "birds of a feather"? Join a like minded-community?

I could see this as possibly either a "contribution" to the existing
projects (if they were interested) or perhaps as an incubating
sub-project of one or the other if large enough, and different enough).

Just my two cents. Good luck.

Thanks,

I should also point out the recent "runtime packaging" proposal .. which
sounds pretty similar, so maybe you could "join" that effort?

Who's there? Just kidding.

If I get your descirption right the whole provisioning story is about
IDE stuff, isn't it? I mean this addresses the workflow of a developer
-> Get configuration - start a preconfigured eclipse -> get provisioned
workspace....

Sadly the RTP project is not about IDE stuff. It's about runtime. So,
if you have any runtime related things, we would very welcome some
contribution.

Regards Holger

Isn't B3 and the whole Buckminster stuff also about distributing the IDE?

Maybe Markus' ideas are more suitable for those projects to "knock" or
provide input?

I saw RTP was already created. Lots of things going on, no wonder the IP
team (person) has no time to deal with releases these days ?;-/
Eclipse "Runtime" was once also a part or keyword of the platform and IDE,
but it looks like now there's more of that on the server side.

If RTP should allow e.g. Virgo or Jetty to properly wok with Orion or s
similar combination, then I suppose it is justified, but I find the myriads
of build, provisioning and installation efforts slightly disturbing.
Scattered across B3/P2/Buckminster, Tycho (although all of these complement
each other, at least in theory) and now RTP.
Not to mention, that at least B3 is under "Modeling", while most of the
others are either Tools, Runtime or elsewhere.

Regards,
Werner
