Hello,

Sorry for the delay but I have dial in information for you. Hopefully this technology will all work, I'll try and get set up early to make sure it is. If all goes wrong for you please fall back to twitter or skype to tell me, both cgfrost.

For audio please dial in and give the participant code: 4427754291
Dial in numbers are below.

To view the demo please go to the website given in the first message.

This will be a quick tour round what we have to help various people understand what we are trying to donate, what features it would be good to keep and what features can die off.

Thanks, Chris.

Thanks Chris and the Virgo team for organizing the call. Here are my short notes about the meeting.

Currently the Virgo tooling is available under EPL license in the SpringSource Tools Suite. They are isolated in a separate feature called "SpringSource dm Server Tools" that can be installed on top of the Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers without the need of any other dependencies. The Virgo team plans to move the Virgo tooling to the Eclipse Foundation as described in another topic in the forum.

What stands out from the demo is that an OSGi bundle project, created by the Virgo tooling, is presented in the Eclipse workspace in a completely different way than one, created with Eclipse PDE. There are historical reasons for this deviation between the Virgo tooling and Eclipse PDE. Nevertheless, the Virgo team is willing to make a better integration of the existing Virgo tooling with the existing Eclipse PDE and Eclipse WTP tools. Their initial contribution will be "as is" in a separate project under Eclipse RT and then they will find out which pieces should go into PDE, which ones - in OSGi Enterprise Tools, and what will remain as a Virgo-specific tooling.

During the demo my attention was caught by two of the generic features in the Virgo tooling. The first one is the "Bundle Information" editor. It shows a nice view in the server editor with a list of all bundles, installed on the Virgo server, and their status. The information available is strictly OSGi related without anything specific to Virgo. This feature could be adapted to any OSGi runtime. It will be a good fit to one of the contributions planned by SAP - the Generic OSGi Server Adapter described in the project proposal.

The other feature that caught my attention is the "Bundle Dependency Graph". It shows the package dependencies of the bundles installed on the Virgo server. It looks to me very similar to the Plug-in Dependency Visualization that we currently have in the Eclipse PDE Incubator:
http://www.eclipse.org/pde/incubator/dependency-visualizatio n/
It would be really nice to consider if the two tools can be consolidated in a common solution.

That's what I can share. Thanks again for the nice demo and fruitful discussion.

Also big thanks from my side for the Virgo tooling demo!

I agree with the observations that Kayolan wrote up in the previous post. Here are my random thoughts:

- The project nature of the Virgo tooling is completely different from PDE. The virgo tooling is based on the idea of generating the manifest from a template (similar to the bndtools), an integration with Maven, and so on. Instead of using bndtools the SpringSource bundlor tool is used for this. I think this is nice, but should be kept separate from the rest of the tooling. It should not matter how you layout or implement your bundle project within Eclipse when it comes to server deployment, etc.

- I like the server views and how they ease the deployment of bundles to the server. This is partly specific for Virgo, partly not. The part that is specific to Virgo is the support for plans and PARs. The rest should be applicable to any OSGi runtime. It could be seen as nice tooling to remotely deal with running OSGi instances. Would be great to have this in the Enterprise OSGi world. But again, this should not depend on the way you implement bundles. It should also be easy to directly deploy a PDE-based bundle.

- I agree also to the dependency visualization part.

My thoughts at the moment...

Cheers,
-Martin
