Hi,

I'm using BIRT report designer 2.6 and corresponding birt-viewer. In one of my report grid columns I have dynamic text html iframe tag requesting a web page through src-tag. Designer preview in Eclipse and birt-viewer under Tomcat show the embedded page correctly in html format, but print-preview shows only part (upper) of the report page (and also prints accordingly). If I use pdf format the embedded element disappears totally.

I've heard that the viewer does not support pdf format in this case, but it seems not even html. Any clue to the problem from someone?

regards

If you put the html in the text element it should show up in PDF, but
not if you use the include.

Jason, what do you exactly mean by "include" and "text element"? The iframe reference is now inside a text report item: <![CDATA[<iframe ... src"http://..." />]]. Should I write the the whole web page html code inside this text element? This page is actually an OpenLayers map coming from a web map server. It contains JavaScript, CSS and HTML. So how to deal with it in BIRT design? Is it possible at all?

Thanks for previous comment!

What I mean was in a text element you can enter HTML code but in your
case that may be to much. Does the OpenLayers have an api you can call
from Java or a url that can return an image?

Returning image I have tried. It works. But unfortunately I cannot get all the things in the picture I want using that method.

When I'm using iframe-tag I request the web page I want to embed into report as a response from Tomcat, GeoServer (java)webapp or a (java)webapp written by myself. So what do you mean by calling OpenLayers functions from Java.

Can I find somewhere an API description about the text element? What can the viewer handle? Can I write a complete html page inside, with html-, head- etc. tags? Can I link external JavaScript or CSS files with script- and link-tags?

P.S. What's the difference between previewing a report in designer and viewing the report in print preview and then printing it out? Because, as I tried to explain earlier, I can see the embedded (with iframe-tag) map page in designer preview, but not in print preview or printout from printer.

When you preview the report the designer runs a runandrender task
renders in html. This is the same as the "View the report as HTML".
When you view in the Viewer and then print it, it does a run task to
generate a rptdocument and then renders in html. The print option then
renders the rptdocument in pdf.

The text element is really setup to handle simple html. For example
head tags will not work. You can do certain inline styles but not all
are supported. Currently we do not have the supported html list
documented yet but we are working on it.

Thanks again! Hopefully the last question. When I work with the viewer in browser window and generate a rptdocument it renders (by default) in html. When I then try to print the document from the viewer, either html or pdf, I get a message "a print preview window is already open" and I'm stuck there. Why? And do you really mean that even by selecting html print format in the dialog the viewer renders in pdf. Does not make sense. Sorry for not understanding what you ment.

Auvo,

Sorry for the confusion. I was not certain what version you were on.
Latest versions of birt offer html and pdf print. Both use the
rptdocument and print in the selected formats. They just use a render
task as opposed to a runandrender task. The error you are getting I am
not seeing. Did you verify you did not have multiple print windows open?

Thanks Jason! I think we can close this issue now. The error I mentioned seems to be related to my Firefox, because in IE the prints from birt-viewer work. I'll try to develop the image format rendering from the web map server. Another option is to let my java controller simply to write out the the html page and let the BIRT then capture it through an iframe-tag in the text element. I found also some interesting ideas in "Evgeny's Blog: BIRT Best Practice". He presents how to integrate Google Maps into BIRT.

That blog entry is very good. I am attaching an example of google maps
that does not use an iframe but you do have to modify the viewer
framesetfragment.jsp. See the report for notes.
