How can we use SIP in ECF [message #624308] Thu, 23 October 2008 09:38 Go to next message

We can not use Skype and XMPP/Google Talk in our firm, and we use
Microsoft Communicator instead. Communicator is based on SIP/SIPS, and ECF
supports IRC, XMPP and MSN protocols. So could anybody help me to use
Communicator over the ECF? Do we have to build a gateway or bridge between
them?
Thank you!

I think you should be able to use the MSN provider for presence and IM
as it is now.

The MSN provider does not currently support the ECF datashare API
(org.eclipse.ecf.datashare), and datashare support is required to
support real-time shared editing. Support for datashare in the MSN
provider could probably be added (I assume that the MSN protocol has
some data channel capabilities). Remy Suen is the ECF committer who
originally wrote the MSN provider and can probably comment further on
this (adding support for datashare in the MSN provider).

For telephony/SIP support

What's needed for ECF is a SIP 'provider' for the ECF call signaling API
(org.eclipse.ecf.telephony.call bundle). We have an enhancement request
for an ECF SIP provider

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=193388

And Roland Fru (ECF committer) is assigned this enhancement. I haven't
been in contact with Roland recently, so I don't know the status of this
work. Roland could you comment on this?

Further, I'm not sure if the MSN flavor of SIP is strictly compatible
with SIP, but I would expect so.

Hi Scott,
Thank you very much for your clear explanation. I am looking forward the
SIP provider coming.
I tried to use the MSN provider to IM with my colleague, but
unfortunately, I failed. We use Communicator INTERNALLY in our Intranet,
and we have our internal Communicator server. When I selected "Connect to
Provider -> MSN" and input my internal account and password, after a few
seconds, it said "connection timeout". I asked a similar question
previously in this Newsgroup. Could I configurate the server address
manually somewhere in Eclipse? Such as in the Preferences. How can I use
ECF in an Intranet?
Thank you!

The "target server" of the MSN connector is not configurable at a UI
level (and, off the top of my head, I don't think it's configurable at
the API level either) as I'm pretty sure it is hardcoded to connect to
the default MSN server.

Ah, I am sorry to hear that. I hope I can use the SIP provider later.
Thank you.

Can we add an enhancement request for this issue?

I didn't even know MS had other servers available for people.

Cheers,

~ Chris

Well, one could be created but I would have to be convinced/presented
with the information that Office Communicator also uses MSNP for
connecting/communicating or it would just be a generic enhancement
request for someone to implement whatever protocol Office Communicator uses.
