When does help preference "Use external browser" take effect? [message #614178] Wed, 07 May 2008 21:22

Hi,

I'm hoping Chris will respond. :-) While I thought this was answered
before, I'm not finding the reference, and I don't want to lead anyone
astray.

Under what circumstances is "Use external browser" used? What widgets
pay attention to that setting?

I'm running 3.4M7 SDK, and trying to answer Mladen's posting by
selecting the Window->Preferences, Help check box labeled "Use external
browser".

I'm trying to figure out which user click-through paths make a help
topic open in its own window (not in the help view).

For example, I stay inside the Preferences window and click Apply. Then
I hit F1 and get the help view. Then I click a link in the help view,
and the linked-to topic is loaded in the help view. It does not open the
external browser.

Then, I uncheck "Use external browser" and apply the change. I click OK
in Preferences and go to the main workbench and choose Help->Help
Contents. The help is loaded in the main help window instead of the help
view. It is the Eclipse help browser window and not my external (system)
browser.

If I check the "Use external browser" and apply the change, and then go
to the main workbench and choose Help->Help Contents, the help starts my
system browser and loads in that full browser window.

Now, if I select "in an infopop" for all of the Open Modes on the Help
preference page, when I click F1 and then click one of the links in the
old-style infopop, those links go to the Eclipse help browser and not
the help view. (Unless you take the link marked "Open in dynamic help").

So it seems that:
a. "Use external browser" seems to be a toggle for either displaying in
the Eclipse help browser window or the system browser window, for those
user click-through paths where a browser window is already supposed to open.

b. The user click-through path from a link that's in the help view
always opens the linked-to topic in the help view again. Is there a
setting to specify that links from the help view would open in a browser
window?

c. The user click-through path from a link that's in the old-style
infopops will open in a browser window.

Is the behavior accurately described above?

Thanks!
Lee Anne
