SWT Has outgrown the Eclipse cocoon. [message #595617] Sun, 12 October 2003 11:46

SWT has become the alternative GUI framework for developing Java applications.
Unfortunately though, it is still buried inside eclipse as an embedded part.
However, there are many people wanting to use SWT that don't even use eclipse,
such as those using VAJ or JBuilder or Together. However, to download it you
have to go spelunking in the download page and find it under the download for
each release of Eclipse. I think this process needs to change.

I think SWT needs to have its own project with its own release schedule, project
goals, contributors and so on. It needs to be a completely separate subproject
and no longer wound so close to eclipse. If it doesn't make this change, it wont
grow and become better, faster, and more powerful. It will merely remain as a
hanger-on to Eclipse. I think that would be a shame given its potential.
