Use e4 or Eclipse RCP for rich gui for desktop application? [message #569133] Sat, 27 February 2010 17:26 Go to next message

I have a Java desktop application and I need to add a rich GUI to it. Is this the kind of application that e4 would be good for, or should I stick with the Eclipse 3 RCP for this kind of thing? (One problem with Eclipse 3 RCP is that the books are out of date.)

If e4 is the better choice going forward for rich GUIs for desktop applications is there sufficient up-to-data documentation to get up the e4 learning curve?

Links to documents and tutorials are welcome.

Thanks.

Dean

Hi,

for an RCP tutorial please see here:

You find a small Eclipse e4 tutorial here:

Hi Dean,

This is my personal preference and as the saying goes, your mileage may
vary, but from my experience of working on a 3.x based RCP application,
I can safely say that eclipse RCP is a mixed blessing.

On some level it is not all too hard to jump in and get some basic thing
off the ground, but on the other hand the whole framework is kind of
inflexible and sometimes you'll have to resort to extensively working
around those inflexibilities.

Although I've not had any significant development experience with e4
yet, I must say that the overall platform looks and sounds more like an
adequate fit for the application I am currently building and maintaining.

If you are just starting to develop your java GUI, I'd strongly suggest
taking a look at e4 and making use of it's infinitely more flexible
architecture.

Here is a screencast to help you getting started:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/E4/E4Designer

We are working on the integration of e4 Visual Designer and XWT to provide a
complete WYSIWYG development environment. Keep turn.
