I want to welcome readers to this news group.

COSMOS is about building frameworks and exemplary tools to assist in the
tasks of system management. Initially the focus is in the developer and test
environments but any interchange formats or services will be designed to
stand up to the rigor of the production environment.

To get things started in the project, we are proposing to host the
development of SML validation and editing tools (see www.serviceml.org for
more details on SML). The context is to support the growth and adoption of
SML as the base syntax to be used when exchanging IT resource descriptions
and information between tools, runtimes and repositories.

COSMOS is also proposed to develop a data collection server that will store
monitored data in a normalized fashion for further retrieval, rendering and
analysis. This along with some BIRT based interfaces can provide a basic
system monitoring console when bound to various data sources. We would like
to focus binding to standard data providers/apis when they exist. We would
also like to help the development of new or improved standards where needed.
For example the need to correlate data from various sources in a distributed
application has had some standards focus but the feedback we have received
suggests there is room for improvement.

We welcome anyone and everyone to comment on the project definition and
startup. Feel free to raise any question in this newsgroup and we will
strive to address your comments.
