I have done many searches and attempted many variations
to get the "Update Software" menu option to work in an exported Windows RCP app from the product wizard.
The basic steps are described in the first third of
http://swtxml.com/blog/eclipsercp/p2_updates_tutorial/
(Basically up to the "Installing additions using p2"section).

I run the exported app and it opens OK. When I try to check for updates I get:
"Cannot complete the request. This installation has not been
configured properly for Software Updates".
The error message in the log is:
!MESSAGE Could not locate the running profile instance. The
eclipse.p2.data.area and eclipse.p2.profile properties may not be set correctly in this application's config.ini file.

Suggestions?

Does your exported product look like the one in Step 10 of the "Creating
the example projects" section?

Or were you trying the menu items when launched from within eclipse?
