Hi BIRT Users

Eclipse freezes every time I'm trying to do the following thing:
1. create a new Reporting project
2. create a new Report ==> Eclipse freezes and has to be shot down with the task manager.

I tried this 2 times with a clean all in one 2.6 download. One time on a Win XP machine (32 bit version) an one time on Win 7 (64 bit version) machine. Both show the very same behaviour.

Obviously this makes working with BIRT impossible.

Any ideas about how to come around this problem?
Best Regards
Ernst

Ernst,

What is the full name of the download file you used?

I have tried
eclipse-reporting-helios-win32.zip
and I do not get the freeze.
Can you try this one:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/birt/dow nloads/drops/R-R1-2_6_0-201006171315/birt-report-designer-al l-in-one-2_6_0.zip

I have the same problem - designer freezes during creation of data source. I tried both 32 and 64 bit installs and the link above. Tried with classiccars example and with mysql jdbc source. Tried increasing java memory to 768M in eclipse.ini. Eclipse either freezes or just shuts down. I'm on 64-bit Windows. I'll try on clean VM - any advise is appreciated.

Are you getting any errors in the workspace/.metadata/.log file?

I tried on clean 32-bit VM - got same problem with both 2.5.2 and 2.6 - using latest JDK 1.6 - 22
Decided to try with Java 5 - which is hard to get as it's EOL
Lo an behold - 2.6 designer works fine.
I'll stick with 1.5 JDK for now - but there should be some way/setting to make this work with Java 6.
I'll look for any error logs...

Can you also open a bug for this?

Hi

I tried JDK 1.6 19,20 and 21. I tried with Eclipse Helios and Ganymed. I also tried the fixes for Eclipse and JDK 1.6 21 mentioned here http://lt-rider.blogspot.com/2010/07/oracle-jvm-6u21-and-ecl ipse.html (and in a lot of other places).

No luck.

It's not only BIRT that is crashing, also normal JSE developement crashes repeatedly after some minutes. Some times I found java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space in the Eclipse log, sometimes nothing was written to the logs.

After all I installed the latest JRockit VM and all of a sudden all problems disapeard.

I did not have any problems running any other Java Applications. All of them work as expecd, except Eclipse.

IMHO there's a genreal problem with Eclipse and the sun/oracle JVM.

I have the same problem before but it is working now after I reinstall the java using build 1.6.0_21-b07 not the b06.
