Helios 64 bit with Qt Eclipse Integration? [message #542003] Wed, 23 June 2010 13:40 Go to next message

Hi Guys

A couple of weeks ago I tried installing the 64 bit release candidate
of Eclipse Helios and then Qt Eclipse Integration on top of it. It
didn't work; there was no sign of the Qt features working in there.

Am I right in thinking that's going to always be the case until Nokia
release a 64 bit version of the integration package?

I'm downloading both 32 bit and 64 bit Eclipse Helios at the moment,
so which one gets installed depends on the answer.

Thanks for your help.

John

PS - One final question - what's the best way to install the official
Helios release given that I'm currently running RC4 (I think). Should
I overwrite what I've got or start afresh. I think the only additional
feature I've installed is GDB Hardware Debugging from a local download
of one of the CDT nightly builds.

Thanks again.

That's a question for the Qt guys. I am working with the Nokia Eclipse guys as we debate the best approach to improve Qt support for the CDT. That may or may not involve reusing the above plug-ins. But yeah, I doubt 64-bit will work.

That one's easy. Just do a Check for Updates. It'll always find the latest bits available and offer to install them for you.

Fair enough. I can live with that for the moment.

Ok - I'll do it that way.

Thanks for your help, and your efforts on CDT.

Just a little question here of compatibility: I'm running windows7 64-bit but have Helios 32-bit running. I only ever need to develop 32-BIT applications.

The Eclipse Integration plugin at http://qt.nokia.com/developer/eclipse-integration/ specifies 32-BIT - - will this plugin work on my current setup?

thanks in advance, michelle

Yes. That's exactly what I'm using.

maybe I'm asking the obvious, but why wouldn't this be availible via HELP > INSTALL NEW SOFTWARE ? ...because QT have to give permission?

When you install it, you end up with a folder in Program Files
(x86)\Nokia\Eclipse that contains a load of dlls that, although most
of them are in the Qt\2010.02.1\bin folder (or lib or something),
includes some that don't appear to be there, e.g. qtcppdesigner.dll,
qtcppproparser.dll and qtcppqrceditor.dll.

My guess is that Install New Software is perhaps mainly designed for
installing Java based plug-ins and adding native dlls isn't well
supported.

I might be totally wrong though, and I hope someone corrects me if
that is the case.

oh here we go, I got a something from Doug Schaefer's blog on Eclipse CDT: CDT, Toward World Domination)

Quote:
The biggest complaint I get from the user community is how hard it is to set up CDT for their platform, especially developers using Windows. That's where Wascana comes in. There's also a variety of environments that don't come with out of the box support, like Qt and Mac Cocoa...

Qt is a natural for cross platform development, so is CMake and Autotools build environments. And I'm helping with CDT support for Android native development. These are things CDT should support out of the box to enable my plan for world domination Smile. And that's what motivates me to keep plugging away.

Yes. That's exactly what I'm using.

ummm... John (or anyone), just to make sure I'm on the right track here whilst I download the 279MB SDK file over a dial-up connection (ouch):

Q1). I write my apps in C (not C++) - will QT still work for me?

Q2) MY STEPS TO INSTALL (are they correct?):
i]. Download & install the windows QT SDK http://get.qt.nokia.com/qtsdk/qt-sdk-win-opensource-2010.04. exe

ii]. Download & install Eclipse Integration plugin for C++ http://get.qt.nokia.com/qteclipse/qt-eclipse-integration-win 32-1.6.1.exe

iii]. Open up eclipse. WINDOW | PREFERENCES | QT --- set the paths as found in the installation of the SDK in [i]

...is that correct? thanks a lot. Michelle

To be honest, I have no idea. That may be an issue, but I've never
tried it. I've never tried interfacing C code to C++ class libraries
in that direction; C++ using C libraries isn't difficult, but I've not
used it the other way.

Assuming you already have Eclipse installed...

As far as I remember, yes.

FWIW - It's definitely worth avoiding installing Qt anywhere other
than the default. Also, the Qt Eclipse Integration adds a "Start
Eclipse With MinGW" link on the menu. That's worth using although it
sets your path to the MinGW location plus a couple of other windows
folders only. I tend to edit the file that runs that (c:\Program Files
(x86)\Nokia\Eclipse\Start.bat) so that it just prepends the MinGW
folder to my existing path.
