I download and install the latest Eclipse version and extract files overwriting what's already on disk. Still the Help --> About says "Version: 3.3.2
Build id: M20080221-1800"

How does this sucker get updated? How do I know if I'm really running the version I just installed (or not)?

What do you mean by "overwriting"? Did you just copy the contents
of the new distribution into the same directory as the previous one?

You should always do either of the following approaches:

a) Delete the old distribution, copy the new one into the same
directory.

b) Copy the new distribution in a separate directory with the effect
that old version and new version are both available.

I don't know what you mean with "update" given your description of what
you did.

Btw, which OS do you use?

Indeed I did.

Regarding your recommended methods of upgrading, that's fine, however I was trying to avoid having to fool around with copying the contents of my plugins directory around. Oh well.

Daniel is correct. You cannot extract a new eclipse over an old
install, that will just make it broken. Extract it to a new directory,
and then you can run it.

Eventually with p2 support, you'll be able to upgrade from one release
to the next.
