Your eclipse in suse should have been initialized in multi-user mode.
which creates an additional configuration area in $HOME/.eclipse.

Are you using Help>Install New Software to install the SVNKit feature?
That should just work for free.

ECLIPSE_HOME is set ot usr/share

I have no rights to change that variable inside the preferences.

Is there a way to modify it by passing ECLIPSE_HOME at start by an flag that overwrites preferences?

No. You cannot change that variable, it is fundamental to the framework
finding its own profiles/jars/etc.

Was your eclipse initialized for multi-user mode when it was
created/installed in the system?

Running eclipse, does it create the $HOME/.eclipse/... subdirectories?

You can always download eclipse from
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/ and use it as a local copy.
