Installation problem - no 'Visual Class' option [message #53280] Mon, 02 August 2004 12:01 Go to next message

Originally posted by: mark.buckland.bt.com

Hi there,

I've looked through this group and the FAQ but couldn't find any answers, so
hopefully someone can help....

I've unzipped:

http://download.eclipse.org/downloads/drops/R-3.0-2004062512 08/eclipse-SDK-3.0-win32.zip
http://download.eclipse.org/tools/emf/downloads/drops/2.0/R2 00406280827/emf-sdo-runtime-2.0.0.zip
and
http://download.eclipse.org/tools/gef/downloads/drops/R-3.0- 200406251257/GEF-runtime-3.0.zip

(the recommended downloads) from:

http://download.eclipse.org/tools/ve/downloads/drops/S-1.0M2 -200407301410/index.html

Eclipse starts up fine but I don't get the option to create a new Visual
Class. Under the Manage Configuration option the Visual Editor 1.0.0 is
lised and the Java EMF Model 1.0.0 is listed as a child. GEF 3.0 is not
visible here but is listed under Help/PluginDetails.

The log contains an error, but I'm unsure if it is relevant as it has not
occured repeatedly with each new startup of Eclipse, I'll include the log at
the bottom of this mail.

I would be grateful if anyone could help here!

Thanks,

Mark.

which lets me work with Java fine.

If you have eclipse SDK you don't need jdt sdk. Eclipse SDK already
includes JDT.

Have you used the VE before? When you say no option to create visual
class, where were you looking for this?

It should of showed up. Is there anything in the .log file?

Also, on manage configurations, GEF should of shown up not as a
subfeature of Visual Editor, but it should of been in the list at the
same level as Visual Editor. If not, then maybe you aren't configured
correctly.

The log file only has one other entry which details not being able to access
the update site (my development machine has no internet connection) - I
tried to 'update' when I was trying to work out what was wrong.

GEF isn't a child of 'Visual Editor 1.0.0', only 'Java EMF Model 1.0.0'
which also has the child 'WTP EMF Integration Core 1.0.0' which has the
child 'WTP Common Utilities'.

GEF is unpacked into ecclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.gef_3.0.0/ (I've double
checked that all the files are present).

As to your earlier note about JDT working, well, upon initally downloading
just Eclipse there wasn't an option for a new Java Project. This was only
availabe after installing the JDT SDK. Perhaps this may help you.

So, I guess the question now is - how can I correctly configue my Eclipse
install?

Thanks,

Mark.

That means you didn't get the Eclipse SDK the first time, you got the
Eclipse runtime instead. I don't think Eclipse Runtime+JDK is
sufficient, I think you need to get the Eclipse SDK. I think there are
other things that VE needs that aren't in the runtime+JDT combination.

I would suggest getting the Eclipse SDK, installing it, then start your
eclipse once using the -clean option. This will tell it to ignore the
old configuration and refresh it with the new one.

Ok, problem solved.

I renamed the eclipse folder to eclipse.old and extracted the Eclipse SDK
and other dependencies for VE.

Restarting eclipse with -clean still did not work. I then tried a new
project and low and behold, I had the New Java Visual Class option.

Perhaps both steps was needed for the solution! Though it was a bit of a
pain having to re-import the Java files and set-up jar libraries.

FYI, GEF still isn't a child of 'Visual Editor 1.0.0' in the Product
Configuration window.

Thanks for your help.
