Gemini team,

Given IBM's commitment to OSGi, we have several groups who have taken an interest in your proposal. Thanks for a well written document. We have a couple of questions about the scope of the proposal.

It states, "As part of the Eclipse Gemini project, Spring Dynamic Modules will be moving to Eclipse.org where it will continue to be developed and to track ongoing enhancements to the Blueprint Service specification." One of the requirements listed for Spring DM 2.x (http://www.springsource.org/osgi) is Spring Framework 3.0.RC1 or greater. Will the Spring Framework source projects also move to Gemini for ongoing development?

The proposal states that the project will provide implementations of existing (my inference) standards and includes in its scope RFC 146 -- JCA Connector Integration. RFC 146 has not yet come up for discussion at the OSGi EEG. Is it your intent that this be an approved RFC by the EEG prior to a Gemini creation review and/or do you anticipate doing development work at Gemini and then submitting that work to the OSGi as a proposal for an EEG standard?

- John

Hi John,

Just to be clear, the entire Spring project is not being moved to Gemini. Only the Dynamic Modules project and the RFC 66 implementation are being hosted within Gemini.

A number of months ago Oracle proposed to do a connectors spec and reserved RFC 146 as the specification number for it and created an internal draft of it. Unfortunately, with the time and resources that the enterprise release demanded, the spec was temporarily put on hold. When it became apparent that it would not be able to make it into the coming enterprise spec it made the most sense for it to remain at a lower priority until the group could focus on future work that would not be part of the next release. While we are getting near to that point, there is no intention to try to complete anything in any accelerated time frame. That Gemini subproject will represent the ongoing work that will happen during the development of RFC 146 within the OSGi EEG.

Hope this clears things up for you,

-Mike
