'Move To' copies instead of moving [message #50531] Thu, 19 June 2008 15:12 Go to next message

When in 'Task List' view, hightlighting a task in the category based on a
Bugzilla query and clicking 'Move To' to move it to a local category
doesn't move the chosen task, but instead copies it there so it appears in
both categories now. Is that the correct behavior? Is it possible to
just move the task?

Thank you in advance,
Simeon

Hi Simeon,

This behavior is by design. When moving a task from a query to a
category the task is essentially copied. The reasoning behind this is
that a query in the Task List is a true representation of the tasks that
result from executing the query on the repository. If the contents
don't line up, information can be lost and results confusing. For this
reason, you can't selectively remove tasks from a query. To do so you
must redefine your query.

Hi, Rob
Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense the way you are describing it.
The 'Move to' name makes it a bit misleading, perhaps 'Copy/Clone to'
would capture it more accurately... The functionality I was looking for
was some kind of a simple workflow starting out from the task on a query
and then moving through a set of folders depending on changes in
particular attributes of a task through its lifecycle. Not sure if
something like this is envisioned by Mylyn's use cases or it had different
usage patterns in mind?
Thank you,
Simeon

IMHO, I find that showing queries like folders but treating them
differently "under the hood" is not very user-friendly.
I opened a request enhancement some time ago for this (I would have
liked to delete and move tasks from queries, too), but it has been
closed as wontfix: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=196925
