hi,
my eclipse used to work just fine, until about a few days ago. when i open it, it says: an error has occurred, see ...\workspace\.metadata\.log. so i opened log.txt and this is what it said:

Hi,

I can't help you much but can you describe the Eclipse version, development platform type and version and a short description of how it hangs.

Me in my case it is stucked at the purple Ganymede logo after a couple of flickering of this small window.

In another forum thread I have posted yesterday my problem and I am awaiting a reference to a document explainning a progressive scenario to tackle with this problem.
The expected document would start with log files, possible corrupted user files to be deleted in some sort of order until it start OK or repair tool my be available, ...

Since it might be a complex task I am awaiting real expert advices.

Best of luck,
RL

yeah, i have eclipse ganymede as well and i'm running it in a windows vista 32-bit system. and it hangs right around the time when it's supposed to tell you which directory (workspace) u wanna use. instead it gives me that error message and tells me to look at the error log.

It looks like your eclipse crashed sometime before and is unable to restore the workspace (the metadata stored by the eclipse might be corrupted).

Try using a new workspace. To force the workspace window prompt you need to change the settings in <Eclipse_root_dir>\configuration\.settings\org.eclipse.ui.ide.prefs and set SHOW_WORKSPACE_SELECTION_DIALOG to true

You import all your projects to the new workspace.

it's all very well to use a new workspace - works like a charm! But what about the many hours I've spent configuring my workspace? Re-importing the projects is the least of my problems.
I've tried restoring earlier versions of the workspace from backups, going back days before the crash, but still Eclipse hangs on loading the workspace - is it keeping settings in some other mysterious place that is conflicting with what should otherwise be a valid workspace?

Probably the two biggest areas of customization are the workspace
preferences and the code template changes you've made if, as I, you
don't like the default way in which the Eclipse editor places braces,
inserts catches, etc.

Export the preferences from the good workspace you've painstakingly put
together via File -> Export -> General -> Preferences. I * * think * *
that the compiler error/warning settings come out with this action, but
honestly I haven't paid that close attention.

Create your own code formatting via Window -> Preferences -> Java ->
Code Style -> Formatter. You name this file and return to this same
place to reimport your profile.

There are additional settings and/or preferences that are saveable, but
these constitute the only ones I worry about.

Good luck.

For anyone interested, I had the exact same problem and deleting the file .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.snap did the trick for me.

Just in case it helps, I tried deleting this .snap file mentioned by Peter above, but that alone did not work. I tried deleting *.snap files below .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources and that did the trick.

Something like:

$ cd eclipse-workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources
$ find . -type f -name "*.snap" | xargs rm

Peter, you saved me too! Thanks very much.

As a matter of interest, what does the .snap file do?

Is there anything I can do to prevent a repeat of the problem?

Thanks again.

Peter,

I don't see the .snap file in my .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/ folder. I'm using Eclipse Indigo version.

Any other suggestions to fix this issue??

If i open a new workspace it is working fine, but I don't know how to import projects from my old workspace that is not working.

Thanks

Peter's removal of .snap file worked for me too! Thanks Peter!

Mac OSX Lion
Eclipse Indigo (3.7.1) JEE developers
Java 1.6.0_29

My OS forced me to restart for some reason and eclipse would not start afterward. In the workspace/.metadata/.log you will see something like this:
!MESSAGE The workspace exited with unsaved changes in the previous session; refreshing workspace to recover changes.
Then a series of numerous stack traces.

The to delete was located in <workspace>.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.snap , just like Peter said.

Rememeber, these files are prefixed with a dot ".", so they are hidden. In Unix, you must use the -a flag with ls to see them.
ls -la

Deleting the .snap file in my .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/ or just deleting the whole folder .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources will work only one time for me.

As soon as I restart eclipse and open the same workspace the error will happen again.

If you are getting something like this in your workspace log, try removing the -vmargs directive in the eclipse.ini file:

Caused by: java.lang.VerifyError: JVMVRFY024 los argumentos no son de tipo compatible; clase=org/eclipse/core/internal/resources/MarkerReader, método=<init>l, pc=0

That worked for me, and I did't lost the projects in my Project Explorer, the workspace opened just fine.

Hi,

i have the same Problem, but as some people before, in my directory eclipse\plugins i can't find any *snap* files. Perheps on windows works eclipse in other way?
I also tried to remove the "-vmargs" from eclipse.ini. No result. When i start eclipse, it starts to "refresh workspace" and "initializing java tools", without progress. In Task Manager i see eclipse process without any activity.
