Hello everyone
I just started having a look at e4, by following the webinars and reading about
the goals. I furthermore downloaded the available release 0.9 to get a first
impression.
And this is what this post is about. I would like to discuss the new way/layout
of a perspective. I was always happy with the way it was in 3.x but I know that
some people had problems with it. The new tab-layout approach is probably easier
for newcomers but in my opinion it just clutters the UI.
In my current work, our (.NET) programm is designed in a similar way, meaning
that it uses a lot of tabs that are embedded into another tab and I never liked
this approach there either, because it looks more complicated than it actually is.
Will there be a way to change the look back to the old one?
Or maybe we can discuss an even better way on how to do this.
Here are some of my thoughts.
A perspective is choosen for a special unit of work. When starting eclipse, I
decide what I need, In my case it is usually PDE or J2EE and in addition Team
(sometimes also SVN). Usually I dont have to switch between them very often.
It is not very likely that you will have CDT, Java, PHP, and more perspectives
open at the same time. Furthermore I would like to point to the Mylin-project
which has a huge success by its philosophy "hide what you dont need".
So, how about a perspective switcher like the old one, just a little bit more
obvious what its for (highligh, different position, etc.) and make it possible
to choose what perspectives show up in a quick-select by the user?
I hope I can contribute to e4 with this discussion. It is not my intention to
complain, rather than having the opportunity to make my beloved :) eclipse even
better.

Hi,
Just for the record. The perspective via tab stuff was done because we
had not enough time to work on the trim parts of the workbench.
Like everything in e4 it's completely customizable by writing your own
renderers. I would have presented this in the webinar but could attend
because of personal reasons.
