I'm looking at making the 4.1=>4.2 transition as smooth and simple as
possible, and as such, I'm leaning towards serviceconfig.xml being
created the same way it's always been... via SetConfig (and all that
lies behind it). This will probably require some effort, maybe even
"magic" behind the scenes (which I'm looking into) as we make the
transition from the RAC being the underlying data communications
mechanism to the new technology AC taking its place. However, I'm far
removed as part of the team providing the AC from the consumers and
users of the products scaffolded on top of the (R)AC. As such, I'm
curious what (if any) visibility serviceconfig.xml has "above us". Once
the installer has run SetConfig, is there much in the way of tweaking
the configuration that goes on? ... or is it usually just left as it is?
I'd appreciate any responses you consumers (of various stripes) have to
offer me ... either here, or via e-mail (if there is much of that, I
will, of course, summarize the results).

I'm responding to my own post for a couple of reasons. For one thing, I
hope it will keep this original post from negatively impacting our
liveness score! :-) (I'm sensitive to our low rating, and hope we'll
move up when they get liveness "live" again.)
Also, I've learned a bit off-line, and I want to share what I've
learned, but I'm not quite at the place where I can do that. To get
there, I'm trying to nail down a couple of more pieces of info that
perhaps others in the project can help me with.
First, if you're a consuming TPTP project/product, I'm still curious
about your awareness of the serviceconfig.xml file. In particular, do
you (1) get everything you need from there handed to you at launch time,
so you don't really care about serviceconfig.xml after installation, or
(2) do you have to ask the agent controller after start-up for
additional information, or (3) do you access the serviceconfig.xml file
yourself? (if so, how?)
Second, if you're somehow responsible for any of the items in the
"plugins" directory of the data collection distribution (not the TPTP or
even the SDK, but the tptpdc part you get if you download the "optional
RAC"), can you help me understand how much your piece is or is not an
"agent"? Once launched, is there communication with you through the
agent controller? If so, how?
Stupidity is difficult to correct, but ignorance is easily correctable.
For that reason I've always been more then willing to admit my
ignorance; it's the easiest way to eliminte the problem! :-) Please help
me in my quest to eradicate one small part of the vastness of my
