If I 'dump' more documents inside an 'extradir'
directory of a help plugin,
they are not indexed unless I delete the index directory and restart
eclipse.

Is there a less brutal way of controlling the index, ie only force it to
be recreated for the extradir content ?

Yes, you can increment the version number of the plugin.

Thanks Chris,
but my idea was to leave the same plugin installed but having users dump
stuff in the extradir - and having the index recreated

can you please point me at the code that would do the trick of updating
the index by discarding the old extradir an adding the new one without
restaing the platform ?

I'd also be happy at writing code that process a given dir like it was
an extradir without it being limited to be a subdir of a help plugin.
