Our help system provides a mailto link at the bottom of each page so users
can easily send us feedback on the documentation. On all platforms except
the Macintosh, this works fine in both the help view (integrated into the
IDE) and in the help browser (either the "internal" browser or a
user-selected external web browser).

On the Macintosh (intel and ppc, OS X 10.4 and 10.5), the mailto links are
nonfunctional in the help view. (They work fine in a web browser.) The
correct mailto link is displayed in the status area, but nothing happens.

Clearly the web browser (Safari, generally) knows what to do with a mailto
link, but it isn't clear to me what the Eclipse IDE uses as a display
engine when help content is in the help view rather than in a browser. Is
this some stripped-down Mozilla browser?

More to the point, does anyone know of a way to configure this so the
mailto links will work in the help view on a Mac?

Thanks in advance,
Doug

What normally happens when you click on the mailto: link, does it just
take you straight to your mail client or does it cause a child window to
get opened? I'm trying to figure out why it would behave differently.

By "all platforms", do you mean that it is working fine on Linux as well
as Windows?

I mean, is it just the Mac that's failing, but other non-Windows
platforms are working fine?

Hi Chris,

Sorry for the delay replying. In all cases except the help view on the Mac,
clicking the mailto link opens the default mail client. On my test
machines, this means the Apple mail client, which does open when the help
is running in the help browser (Safari, in this case).

Thanks,
Doug

Hi Lee Ann,

Sorry for the delay replying. Yes, it works as expected on Windows and
Linux. We also support Solaris, but the help always comes up in a browser
there, so there's no direct comparison. Only in the help *view* on the Mac
do the mailto links fail.

Thanks,
Doug

Hello, I know this thread is a year old but this reply is just to let you know this issue still happens and I'm having it reproduced on Linux while using Slackware 13 with kde 4.

Eclipse 3.5 will open an internal, incomplete and unstable version of the seamonkey mailer tool; even a pretty usable composer is there (which, if open will crash eclipse after being using it).

regards,

There is a bug open - https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=229732 but it has not been looked at in a while. If you can move the discussion to that bug report I'll take a look at it again.
