linux: browser - what part of mozilla is needed? [message #461164]

hi,
i figured out in linux the mozilla is needed as browser but i don't like
it and never use it -- so
a) is there a way to use another browser instead?
b) if not, which part of mozilla is used? only a lib or a whole bunch of
files? is it possible to create a small distribution of the files
necessary and prevent the installation of a fullblown, fat mozilla?

You need to have any Gecko based browser engine with support for
embedding (Mozilla or Firefox or whatever). Note that Firefox from
mozilla.org is not built with embedding support (to keep the download
small) but many distributions build their versions of firefox with
embedding support.

You could probably build just the GRE/Gecko libraries but I'm not
sure how difficult that would be.

the officially downloadable version of mozilla.org or a special one?
old faqs mention one should not use the default mozilla-download because
some embedding-functionality is missing.
i tried the firefox 1.0.6 from debian/unstable and it does not work
(probably not at least because the needed libstdc++'s versions are 5 and 6
respectively).

I think like Billy mentioned, the embedded support is not compiled in be
default but can be added if you compile yourself.

I'm using a pre-compiled RPM for Fedora Core 4, it does seem to have
embedded support compiled in.

strange. if swt depends so heavily on 3dparty software with features not
commonly included it should provide the needed libraries by itself.
already posted an enhancement request.

i always get
org.eclipse.swt.SWTError: No more handles [NS_InitEmbedding /opt/firefox/
error -2147221164]
is it a sign that embedding support is missing?
