Do you think a SWING port of SWT would be useful, e.g. for
Applet-Distribution or Webstart where someone does not want to include
native libs?

What do you think?

Yeah, I think a Swing port of SWT makes sense for those reasons.

I think that a Swing port would also have the following additional advantages...

....Would make it possible to develop Look & Feels for SWT. Heresy yes, but it would be useful for someone that want's to
develop a non-IDE application with the RCP and that wants thier application to have a 'branded' look & feel instead of a native L&F.

....a Swing-based version of SWT would be more cross-platform than 'plain-vanilla' SWT since Swing guarantees some UI behavior
across platforms (like focus behavior) whereas SWT provides no such cross-platform guarantees.

....would make it easier to port an existing Swing application to the RCP and avoid a 'Franken-UI' result.

Hmm - cause I am working on such a port and first visible results are
there ;-)
However the company I am employed at is still thinking howto release it...

its been done, or rather commenced, the port was never finished.

Christopher, the maintainer of SWTSwing contacted me with a few questions
about a month ago.
I think he was determined to resurrect the project, which was kind of dead
during the last year. But haven't heard anything from him since then.
Clemens, you may want to ask him what the status of this project is..

Why go back to failed crap?
I really hated the quality of implementation of Swing.
I spent months of work converting huge AWT system
into Swing and ended up abandoning the work due
to quality of Swing.

What we need is Swing APIs implemented in the same
way as SWT implemented. In this way, we get quality
GUI development environment. Note that this problem
rises because of that systems on MS platforms far ahead
of other platforms. Unless you have matching quality,
your Java program will be never be attractive to average
Windows users. Note that I am saying this from my
experience!
