rich text investigation in 3.1 plan [message #452400] Sat, 19 March 2005 21:22 Go to next message

In the plan for 3.1 there is a bullet item to "investigate chances of a
SWT rich text widget". Has this happened? Is there a bug where I can
track the status of this? The reason I ask is, like many, I have the
need for a rich text control for my application.

http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/index.cgi/platform-text-home/ 3.1/plan.html?rev=1.6

Thanks,
Brad

I think that https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=54426 is the
report that you want to track.

Actually now that I've reread the bug I don't think this is what I'm
asking for. I'm looking for RTF as in Microsoft's Rich Text Format
specification and not just styled text.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/e n-us/dnrtfspec/html/rtfspec.asp

I'm assuming that the 3.1 plan was speaking about Microsoft's RTF. Is
that a wrong assumption? It seems like "rich text" and "styled text"
are used interchangably and I think they're actually quite different.
It seems like the bug starts out talking about rich text but eventually
gets into adding abilities to the StyledText widget which could be part
of the solution but there is still a need to create a RTFReader
(https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=52296).

I'll follow up with some questions on the bug report.

I don't think that the plan item intent was to use Microsoft's rich text,
but to extend StyledText as indicated.

'Rich Text' tends to be a term used loosely to describe text that
can be styled with multiple fonts/size/color/decorations and with
possibly embeddable images. The term Rich Text is not specific to
any implementation.

Microsofts Rich Text Format is a file format, a subset of which
is understood by the Windows95+ Common Control, the Rich Edit Control.

I believe that any eariler version of StyledText was based on that Control,
under Windows, but there were some problems and they removed it.(?)

Note: that Swings JEditorPane supports RTF and HTML. C.f. SWT Snippets
on how to interop Swing with SWT.

There is native support for RTF on MacOS X, too, though perhaps not in
Carbon.

Thank you for the clarification. I assumed we were just dealing with
semantics but had to make sure.

My concern about the bug is that it hasn't been updated since last
September in regards to adding these abilities to the StyleText widget.
I'm new to the process and I'm not sure, from an outsiders
perspective, how to tell if this has been lowered in priority. I know
I'd like it because it would give me some direction on how I solve my
RTF problem in SWT. I have a deadline coming up soon that calls for RTF
support. If I knew that this bug has been lowered in priority I can at
least mark it off the list of possible solutions for this upcoming
deadline.

A major work item like this normally appears on an Eclipse plan as a
committed item. If an item is committed, then it will be done. We are at
M6 now and API frozen so odds are very low that work will happen in this
area. Is there a particular feature that is missing that you need?

This started out as "how can we support RTF in SWT". I thought that
with a few added abilities like text alignment, bullets, and the ability
to have different fonts our requirements would be satisfied. But it now
looks like my requirements go beyond that and require images and tables
as well. It seems like that wouldn't be something that SWT would want
in the StyledText widget but it's what is requested on the bug report.
Hopefully I can make do via other means but I'm curious what the stance
is on adding the support outlined in this bug in the future and the
basic stance on supporting Microsoft's RTF spec.

I'd like to do the work post 3.1 but can't plan for it right now.
