I assume that you know about the problems eclipse has on unix platforms.

There are 2 official SWT-Ports:

1.) The first is based on motif and it is my guess that it is only
maintained to be compatible to old-style unices.
It is fast (but slower than Windows) but looks ugly and it is a pain to
really work with it in production.

2.) The second is a port to the modern GTK2 widget set.
This looks and feels quite adequate, however performance is terrible.
There is already a bug report about bad GTK2 performance and it is the bug
with second most votes.
However Eclipse developers claim theres not much they can do to make it
perform faster, they even told many times GTK2 is only a bit slower (which
is complete nonsense - they would know that if they would use Eclipse on
Linux).
Also Benchmarks show signifcant worse performance.

There also exists an unofficial SWT port to the fox-toolkit which is so
fast that it even outperforms the windows-version of SWT. However it is
mainly a one-man project and is quite unstable, so this guys surely would
need some help.
The Fox port is fast, looks nice and since it is linked statically it
works out-of-the-box.

see http://swtfox.sf.net for further details.

Please support this FOX-port, simply go to http://bugs.eclipse.org and
search for bug-id: "39446".
Please register a bug-report-account and vote for this bug.
The more votes this bug-report receives the faster IBM will decide to
support FOX (and maybe drop Motif?).
I also thought a long time that it would be better to make GTK2 faster
than to introduce a new platform.
However all the development-efforts have only shown minimalistic
enhancements, so maybe fox is THE solution.

Please do not understand me wrong, the GTK2 port of course should be
continued at least because it offers full l&f compatibility with the gnome
desktop.

It would be great if you would give SwtFox you vote, at least if you use
Eclipse on this platform.

Thanks in advance, lg Clemens Eisserer

Come on, please give swtfox your vote!

It has for now only about 14 voted and needs also your help - image how
fine it would be to have a fast eclipse running on linux!
