Okay, so this is a really old thread, but as of today I've got the first
iteration of an Update Manager-capable site for updating EMF, SDO, and XSD.

I'm curious what wuold make this more useful. Eclipse has a testUpdates
site for integration builds, but as of today, we're only doing point
release updates for EMF/XSD/SDO, which means 2.0.0. Would people find
use/benefit in having an update site with 2.0.0.200404281603, for example?

To play with the EMF/XSD/SDO 2.0 update manager site (for Eclipse 3.0,
natch), go here, and read the instructions on that page; or, simply
point your update manager at the following site and you can grab the
most recent version of EMF, SDO, or XSD that way. Should be current as
of about 2pm today.

Thanks,

Nick Boldt

Okay, I'll try to start posting to our UM site
(http://download.eclipse.org/tools/emf/updates/) with the same frequency
as the posts to http://download.eclipse.org/tools/emf/scripts/downloads.php

Actually, I'll probably end up trying to script this into our build
process. (Why do something more than 2-3 times when you can automate it
and never have to do it again?) ;-)

Anyone have any insight into building UM jars via script (as opposed to
the site.xml editor within eclipse) ? Any help on this would definitely
make the work effort easier and more likely to happen faster. Heh.

One caveat is that I'm not sure how many places the code needs to be
updated to have this work. Does anyone know if it's just the filenames
on the jars that UM looks for? Or does it read into those jars and check
something like feature.xml, perhaps? If it's just the jars it would be
easier to automate - renaming files is easy. If it's INSIDE the jars,
then I need to ensure these changes are checked back into CVS, etc.,
which while not being significantly harder, does make the dev/test
process somewhat longer.

Thanks in advance,

Nick

Update.

Turns out there's more to this UM thing than I'd at first thought
(hoped?), but I've managed to establish all the places where versioning
is encoded in plugins.

I'd hoped that jars could simply be renamed from foo_2.0.0.jar to
foo_2.0.0.20040506.jar, and while that works (assuming that site.xml is
updated equivalently) what it doesn't do is allow eclipse w/ emf 2.0.0
installed to be updated to 2.0.0.x, since when UM reads those jars, it
finds 2.0.0, not 2.0.0.yyyymmdd. So, feature.xml & plugin.xml has to be
updated everywhere in order to do the build & have the jars contain the
right info.

Anyway, the upshot is that I'm going to try to get my hands on the Ant
task that Eclipse 3.0 uses to drop builds to updates.eclipse.org, and
use that to get us moving along with UM compliance.

I've also posted a new UM build onto
http://download.eclipse.org/tools/emf/updates/ - dated May 8, 2am. If
EMF, SDO, or XSD are already installed you have to remove it/them or UM
will think that this version of 2.0.0 is the same as the one you already
have, regardless of timestamps.

Thanks for your patience. Just out of curiosity... how many people will
actually use this feature? If you're one of them, please reply to this
thread.

Thanks,

Nick Boldt

Update Manager site now actually contains a working update, based on
today's Integration build
(http://download.eclipse.org/tools/emf/scripts/downloads-vie wer.php?s=2.0/I200406211000).

We'll start dropping updates to this site as of our next build.

IBM Internal can use:

http://fullmoon.torolab.ibm.com/tools/emf/updates/
http://emf.torolab.ibm.com/tools/emf/updates/

The rest of the world can use:

http://download.eclipse.org/tools/emf/updates/

(and any other mirror server that's mirrored everything under /tools/emf)

There's some instructions listed on the above pages for how to use them,
if you're not familiar with Update Manager. You can also email me any
questions/problems you might run in to.

Thanks,
