Hi everyone,

My name is Don Martin and I work for a public non-profit research center.
We have created a software toolset for the modelling, validation and
animation of electronic messages and I thought that your group might be
interested in our work. In simplest terms, our toolset was designed to
help business analysts design a model for the exchange of data between
multiple business partners, animate/validate the data via a work flow
engine, and then give non-technical business people the ability to
interact with the model via a web browser. If you are familiar with jBoss
jBPM then you can make a (slight) comparison between the two. Our toolset
has an open source component and I would very much like to see if there is
a need for our modelling expertise and/or the tool set.

Technical components
UML modelling software (Magic Draw)
CASE plug-in for translation of model to XML/XPDL
Workflow engine to animate model
Web site for interacting with the model

If someone would like to know more or has specific question please feel
free to contact me. I will also add this info to the Modelling and
Swordfish groups if I can.

PS: it is not a good ideas to post the same thing on different
newsgroups. When posting to several newsgroup, it is best to add them

Hi Antoine,

Thank you for your response. I will try to answer your questions in order
and then give you some additional information. I work for a
not-for-profit public research center in Luxembourg. Our work is funded
via EU and national grants. We have supported FOSS projects in the past
and are active in trying to promote its use (go to www.tudor.lu if you
would like to learn more). I learned of Eclipse from another FOSS
initiative and contacted Frederic Conrotte (Kaupthing bank) to see if OFMP
might have a need for our tool. Long story short, he suggested that I
contact the newsgroup.

Our toolset was developed for businesses that need to define the scope and
precise data elements that are exchanged in complex electronic
transactions. At a high level our toolset has two components; a CASE
plug-in designed for Magic Draw (not very FOSS-like, but at the time it
was the best tool for our UML needs) and a workflow engine that is made up
of open source components. We have a research oriented web site at
http://efficient.citi.tudor.lu/ (link to the English version at the top of
the page on the right) and if you will send me your email address I can
send you a FLASH demo of what we have built.

Ideally, what we are looking for is a work-study project where we would
use our toolset and modelling skills in a real-world environment.
Normally we ask for a funded project (we can usually get matching funding
up to 50%) with a partner and then would "transfer" the code to the
project partner as part of the project. As most of the toolset was
developed using GPL components it don't believe that it would be a problem
to make it EPL.

Now I know that this may not be in the true sprit of FOSS and Eclipse, but
if I can find a definite need for our toolset then I might be able to
argue for more involvement in the project. If it turns out that you can
use another open source tool to accomplish the same thing, then at the
very least I can present Eclipse to our directors and see if they want to
contribute in another way.

Thanks for this, I've played back your flash demo on the website, but I found
it difficult to get a proper handle on it.

I'd like to propose that we organise a meeting and if you'd be able to walk
through your proposal we could see if there would be a home for it in the STP.

Hi Antoine,

Good questions all. I will be having a phone call with Adrian Skehill next
Wednesday to discuss both the STP project and what our interest is. Since
I do not really know yet if our work would be of value to any of the
Eclipse projects you will please forgive me for not coming up with a firm
recommendation. I can confirm that we did use Eclipse to create our CASE
tool and animator. Since we have used a proprietary UML software (Magic
Draw)as part of our work I don't believe that we will be recommending
replacing anything that has to do with UML. However our workflow
engine/animator was built using open source tools and is under GPL so I
beleieve that - provided that we find a project that corresponds to our
research - we would be forced (if I can use the term) to release our work
to the public domain after the project is over. Hopefully after next weeks
call things will be clearer and we can perhaps move forward.
