Update-Site, builds with new feature name? [message #3196] Thu, 14 June 2007 12:47 Go to next message

Hi,

on the Mylyn project page, in the download section the URL still carries
the name "mylar".

Do there exist any estimates as to when proper Mylyn dev builds will be
available, and on what update site URL?

Regards,
Jörg

We are done with the source code rename, related restructuring, and most
importantly the transitioning mechanism:

192308: invalidate previous Mylar installs when updating to Mylyn
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=192308

The current plan is:
* 3.3 Dev build today
* 3.3 Dev/RC1 preview build tomorrow
* 3.2 and 3.3 RC1 build Monday the 18th (the 3.2 backport will be very
involved this time due to the rename)

Will there be a 3.2 Mylyn, or will it stay named as Mylar to allow upgrades?

Is the Mylar plugin still upgradable to Mylyn, or does it mean a re-install?

IMHO, the procedure:

* Export Tasks
* Uninstall Mylar
* Install Mylyn
* Import Tasks

should also work. It is not as smooth, but the rename is not happening every day, though.

Cheers, Jörg

Since we are committed to having a 3.2 release of our 2.0 release, yes,
the plan is to have a 3.2-based Mylyn as well.

I don't think that it is smooth enough for the average use because of
how hard it is to uninstall things in Eclipse (especially 3.2). Also,
many users have numerous versions of org.eclipse.mylar plug-ins
installed since they have been using "Search for updates". And the
bottom line is that we dread thinking of the tens of thousands of users
having to waste time on taking up to an hour for going through those
steps when what we're trying to do is save people time ;)

So thanks to some OSGi version trickery, when you update to Mylyn, the
old plug-ins will automagically stop working and users should have no
additional update steps.

I really do appreciate this kind of social thinking: You will save the mankind about 10.000 hours of
time.

Thanks, I am looking forward to try this.

I can't tell you how many times Rob and I have been in the office late
and one of us has said something to the effect of: if we spend just one
more hour on this feature just think how many hours we'll save people ;)
It's seems to be our little internal mantra when then things get
tough (e.g. when you have to rename and restructure your entire
codebase). I think that we once jotted it down as "working very long
hours so that you don't have to" ;)

OK, enough kidding around, back to the code :)
