You should probably be going through http://www.aptana.com/support.html, but off hand I'd say it's set up to be run with Java 8 and not anything newer.

Thanks, I'll try Aptana support. It's using Java 8 because it won't work with anything newer - I went all through that when I first installed Aptana. Unless, of course, there's now an Aptana update that will work with later Javas.

The log indicates it's being run with Java 11, whether on purpose or by accident.

So how do I force it to use Java 8 which should be installed?

Edit the eclipse.ini and add two lines like this before the -vmargs line:
-vm
C:/Program Files/Java/jdk1.8.0_231/jre/bin
-vmargs
Of course you're on Linux so the path will be different. Be careful of trailing spaces.

I've changed the default to Java 8 and Aptana now works correctly.
Thank you for everyone's help.
