I think maybe using the register should be the direct way

You could have a look at the gpio access we have for the RaspberryPI. More powerful is our new IO infrastructure where the user can more flexible configure the IO access. Unfortunately we still don't have much documentation. You can have a look at the embrick and new Wago K-bus modules as reference implementations.
