I've been succesfully using Eclipse CDT for some time, and I want to use Eclipse (2019-12) to help understand some 3rd party javascript code. I've installed (using Help/Install new software) what the Eclipse help describes as WDT or Javascript Development tools version 2.1.5.

I've successfully created a File/New/JavaScript project and pointed it at my source.
Now I don't want to run anything, just look at the code, but the features I'm used to in CDT just don't work. If I select a function name and ask forReferences or Open Declaration it doesn't work and says either "The operation is unavailable on the current selection, please select a valid javascript element name" or "current text selection does not resolve to a javascript element".
The outline view shows nothing inside an export {}.

What am I missing here?
Any help much appreciated.
