I want to say "please fix this", but I'm guessing since it's been like this for years it's intentional...

There is a perfect looking "dirty" icon. Let's use that instead of the > symbol. The current default (>) is awkward.

A file can be dirty and staged at the same time. VCS-related overlays are supposed to appear in one corner of the icon only (bottom right), so just decorating more corners is not an option. Nor is overlaying overlays; that won't look good at all.
