Why did I have t o click "Reload" on the SpringToolSuite update site? [message #1823194] Sat, 21 March 2020 23:41 Go to next message

A few days ago I was told that the new version of the Spring Tool Suite was released, to go with the Eclipse 2020-03 release. After I saw that I attempted an update, and it said there was nothing to update. I tried again later that day. I tried again the next day, and the day after that. Still no update.

Then someone suggested something that they assumed wouldn't work, which was clicking the "Reload" button on the update site entry in the preferences. I did that, then checked for update, and it saw the new updates immediately.

Generally, when I hear that a plugin has new updates, checking for updates immediately after I hear that gets the new updates.

Can someone explain what's going on here?

Even Reload... doesn't always do the trick:

The general problem as I understand it that p2 keeps soft references to loaded repository information, so once loaded, this information tends to stick around for a very long time, unless there is an out-of-memory condition about to happen which generally only happens when there are memory leaks.

It's kind of annoying and when Reload doesn't really deeply reload a composite, it's even more annoying.

Generally p2 gets very little love and attention because of course who pays for that? No one. And who is motivated to fix p2 problems for free?

And it's not as if droves of users donate anything either:

There are already 200,000 downloads of installers and packages for 2020-03 with a whopping $700 in donations since the release.
