Why is the mac os x cocoa-x86_64 download hidden away? [message #336608] Thu, 25 June 2009 04:55 Go to next message

On the eclipse download page: http://eclipse.org/downloads/

Linux is listed for each bundle as 'Linux (32-bit)' and 'Linux (64-bit)'.
Mac OS X has listings for "cocoa" and "carbon", but the cocoa links seem
to all go to ....-cocoa.tar.gz, which are the 32-bit versions. This means
they HAVE to run on java 1.5 and not java 1.6, as the only (apple) JVMs on
java 1.6 are 64-bit.

You CAN find the ...-cocoa-x64_64.tar.gz downloads on the eclipse PROJECT
download page:

http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/

but the only practical way to get there is via a small link in explanatory
text near the bottom of the usual download page, and the only download
offered there is eclipse classic.

Why is that?

I'm heading over there too: I just tried to "overlay" the 64-bit
version over the 32-bit version, and am ending up editing all sorts of
config files I've never been in before!

I'll revert back to pure 32 until I've read more :-)

Ah, that's the right newsgroup for this question. I poured over the list
but evidently I missed it. Thanks for the pointer, eric - heading over
there now.

The best approach if you want 64-bit right now is to download the
"Eclipse Classic" Package build for OS X 64 (available under "Other
Downloads" link) and then install whatever features you want using the
Help > Install New Software... wizard.

Hope this helps,
Eric

There's also a text/picture description on Ekke's blog:
