I'm trying to install the latest Eclipse, 2019-06, on Windows 10 Here are steps I followed:

1. Downloaded eclipse-inst-win64.exe from https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/oomph/epp/2019-06/R/eclipse-inst-win64.exe using the Download from: United States - OSU Open Source Lab (http) mirror.

2. Ran eclipse-inst-win64.exe as Administrator.  Splash screen is shown and then installer fails with Java crash.

The failing JVM is IBM Java 8.0.5.36. Is this a known problem?

I've not tested with that JVM but a JVM crash is generally JVM-specific issue. You could instead directly download and unzip a package from here:

https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/

But, given that the installer in an Eclipse RCP application, the unzipped package installation is likely to fail the same way as the installer. But it's worth a try...

Thanks for the reply. I have reported the JVM crash to IBM Java Support. I just posted here to see if any one else had experienced this problem with other Java versions. I do plan to try installing Eclipse 2019-06 from a package file rather than the Eclipse installer to see if that works.

I've found the Eclipse Installer also results in a Java crash with OpenJDK Java 8 with J9 from AdoptOpenJDK. The Eclipse installer runs fine using the OpenJDK Java 8 with HotSpot from AdoptOpenJDK. From the IBM Java Support Engineer I'm working with on this issue:

Quote:
We think the issue might be related to how Eclipse is handling the `JAVA_HOME` parameter. For some reason, it seems like it handles the AdoptOpenJDK 8 with HotSpot implementation properly, but not IBM's. The best path forward would be to open a ticket with Eclipse

Where should I open the Eclipse bug?

IBM is closely involved in Eclipse. If there is a specific problem that only happens with a particular version of an IBM JVM implementation, it will definitely be best if IBM itself investigates that issue rather than telling a user to report a "Eclipse bug" with the expectation that someone else investigate a JVM-specific problem.
