Another typical eclipse problem: when starting up my Photon installation I get an indication that updates are available. I click that popup and select the two available updates, accept the license and hit ok (or update?) - and what do I get?

Error updating software:

An error occurred while collecting items to be installed
session context was:(profile=U__eclipse_dev_photon_eclipse, phase=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.engine.phases.Collect, operand=, action=).

I installed Photon using the eclipse installer by Oomph.
What am I missing? How do I get this thing to update itself?

If you have older version of market place client installed already, then you can update it by opening it and click on the update link. If no update link, then search for Marketplace. It took me 2 weeks to find this.

If you don't have it installed, then you can install it first from 2018-09
repository(General tools) - it is v. 1.7.2. And after update it with the trick from above

Sorry - I don't understand what you are saying here. This was an update attempt not of or via the market place but via the "traditional" Check for Updates. But automatic updating has been a major eclipse nightmare since years now!

If you have marketplace installed, open it, and the first item should be the marketplace, with a handy update button.

Click on that. finish, and the update is applied correctly.

I got exactly the same errors as you did via standard Eclipse software update.

Coming back to this:
I may be crystal clear to others but not to me. When I open Marketplace I get the following:
index.php/fa/36080/0/
Where is here that mentioned "update button"? Pardon my ignorance - and maybe I should see an optician - but I can't see any here!

And the other point I still don't see: I hadn't been trying to update anything I had installed via marketplace but the basic Eclipse installation (Eclipse for Java developers). Why should I see marketplace for this?

Updates can be done manually with Help -> Check for Updates (and automatic updates are just doing that automatically) Updates can fail depending on what software sites are listed under Window -> Preferences -> Install/Update -> Available Software sites. The things you install can automatically add to this list (via touch points in their installable units) and marketplace client (MPC) unfortunately added such a site that was modified to point at a newer version and that newer version could not be installed in the older version of Eclipse where the original older version of MPC was installed. (Or the version you had installed is no longer in that site they added.)

First, thanks to @Ed Merks for bothering to spend the time entering a more detailed description than just "it's obvious".

Just to be certain, my understanding of the issue (and resolution) is as follows:
-MarketPlace Client (MPC) added a reference to an update site to my/our Eclipse installation
-That update site was not being handled properly by the normal Eclipse update method
-The solution is to first update your MPC version, THEN re-do the Eclipse update.

Does this sound about right?

Yes, that sounds about right. There was a long thread on this topic:

https://www.eclipse.org/lists/cross-project-issues-dev/msg17494.html

The underlying case was determined to be that MPC added the content metadata repository automatically but it did not add the artifact metadata repository automatically.
