He told us to use notepad++ but right after he said that its not the best program to write Java. I'm just wondering what the best free and paid program. This is my first class in programming and I just want to start off on the right foot.

Not surprisingly in the Eclipse Java Tools forum we're going to tell you Eclipse is the best for this purpose and it's free. So visit https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/ and install the Eclipse IDE for Java Developers.

Learn to use the debugger immediately. It's your best friend ever!

For me the best java programming software is Eclipse. The other one is Netbeans. But I recommend you Using Eclipse.
