Virgo & OSGi in the new "docker" and "micro services" world? [message #1790378] Fri, 08 June 2018 19:59 Go to next message

I was just wondering what the community's view of this is.

I'm firmly in the OSGi patterns side of things as the way to implement enterprise development and using Virgo as an enterprise OSGi enabling server.

Pitching OSGi with Virgo against JEE with Websphere, as an enterprise solution, was, in my case, already a success but ..

With the current trend towards docker, micro services (especially spring boot) the question that I have found myself being posed more often is "is any kind of enterprise server really required".

Moving forward, I think that the technological advantages of OSGi and Virgo remain unchanged, especially when it comes to dependencies and service management.

Is there a chance that an official "eclipse virgo image" could be created on the docker hub?

I've attached my modified Dockerfiles based on Gabor Renner's work, but modified for the latest release and using the published "8443" port.

There already is an official "eclipse" release user for docker (see: https://hub.docker.com/r/eclipse/), can we not get the virgo added to that channel too?

Hi Bill,

thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I had a look at the Dockerfile you provided.
They contain roughly the same instructions as are generated with dockerizor[1].

A while ago I created the Gradle plugin 'eclipsesource/dockerizor' exactly for that purpose.
Images created with dockerizor have been pushed to dockerhub[2] once or twice.
From the beginning we had im mind, that it might be a good fit for the Virgo project and used EPL-1.

As of today there is an official section in the Eclipse project handbook about dockerhub[3].
I like the idea of providing such official images for Virgo.

Would you mind creating a bug to discuss the datails?

florian

Hi Florian,

As per your request, I've filed an "enhancement" bug.

I wasn't aware that "eclipsesource" was an official user account and I wanted a vanilla install with splash & admin console (one of virgo's winning points).

Regards,

Bill
