So i run ARCH Linux 64, and today i tried to install eclipse oxygen. The first time i downloaded the JDK 8, but eclipse would not even start. Then i downloaded the JDK 9, set the env path and tried again. Now everytime i run eclipse after choosing the work space, this error occures:

This error is generated in a hidden .log file inside my workspace/.metadata

None of the released Eclipse versions work out-of-the-box with Java 9; those versions will come next month starting with Oxygen.1a. Follow these instructions to get the older version to work with Java 9: https://wiki.eclipse.org/Configure_Eclipse_for_Java_9#Configure_Eclipse_for_Java_9_modules , or switch back to Java 8 for now. You can use the -vm command line switch to force Eclipse to use a specific JVM executable. You can find more info that at https://help.eclipse.org/oxygen/topic/org.eclipse.platform.doc.user/tasks/running_eclipse.htm?cp=0_3_0 .

Thanks for you answer! I returned to JDK 8 but for some reason when i start eclipse using the script ( ./eclipse ) eclipse crashes. And then a brilliand idea came to me. I said "Lets run it as root (using sudo)" and eclipse run just fine!!!

For some reason which i dont understand (since i have eclipse in my home directory) , i must run it with root privileges.

Do you know why this might be required?

Did you install it using sudo? What does the line after the --launcher.library look like? Perhaps you were trying to create a single read-only shared installation like in this post:

Yes i used sudo, but anyway i don't really have a problem running eclipse as root.

Better to use sudo only to create a shared read-only installation, in which case you'll want to look carefully at where the bundle pool is located and make sure that both it and the installation folder are read-only for the users. But if you're fine as it is, that's fine with me. :-)
