I received emails from Eclipse promoting Sirius... can't tell from the documentation if Sirius is supposed to replace Papyrus, if it's a generalization of Papyrus to other modeling languages, or if it's an independent and parallel effort. Any clarification gratefully received, thanks!

Hi,

Both projects are unrelated (Although they use some common libraries, and fill some similar needs).

Historically, Papyrus started as a standard UML Graphical Modeler, and later added some UML-based customization support. Sirius started as a customizable EMF-based graphical model editor, and later provided a UML implementation (UML Designer).

Both (Sirius and Papyrus) are based on GMF Diagram/Runtime, and both (UML Designer and Papyrus) manipulate Eclipse UML (semantic) models. The serialization of diagrams is based on GMF Notation in both cases, but Notation is a generic model, so Sirius/UML Designer and Papyrus cannot share their Diagrams (At least not without a transformation, which would probably not be trivial).

There are many more differences in the set of features and philosophy of both tools, but I think that's not the point here :)

Cheers,
Camille
