If I would want to contribute another sample, I am uncertain if I can just create a pull request with only the scanned pdf and BSI would then do all the processing, or would I need to use the steps described in the tools directory to create the sample data myself?

as long as there are not too many pull requests we can do all the necessary processing :-)

Thanks for your feedback. After some time figuring out how to get my data onto github so I could create a pull request I have now successfully uploaded my scan and created a PR for your master branch.
