AppServer as non-OSGi [message #1761088] Sat, 06 May 2017 13:32

Hi Team,

Along with the benefits OSGi environment brings related to the modularisation, it comes with some drawbacks:

  • Complex development environment setup
  • Only proper OSGi bundles as dependencies
  • Limited easy-win bundles from the standard Orbit repository
  • Caching problems for update in Apache Tomcat
  • Maven + Tycho complexity for the build
  • Classloading complexity in case of Tomcat deployment

Can we separate the AppServer component outside of OSGi parts and build it on the most recent yet cool frameworks e.g. SpringBoot?
Some efforts are already spent related to the AIR/Mini distributions.

Regards,
Nedelcho
