I have just listed as example some of the questions I had to deal with over and over. I will not write a summary of all good conversation I had at the booth, but I am happy to engage and continue the discussion here.

EPL: the main point is that you can build commercial application on top of EPL licensed components. Refer to this post: EPL Licence

Role of the Eclipse Foundation for our project:
* Support to present open source; convince our company board and some of our customer when we decided to open-source with our closed source framework.
* Template/processes: the Eclipse foundation helps you. They know how to run open source projects.
* Marketing: as Eclipse project, the attention you get is bigger
* Strong intellectual property check => something that is also a benefit for the commercial application on top of it.

The Eclipse Foundation is one of the big organizations for open-source software and when we started this, we knew other Eclipse Committers.

About the role of foundation I recommend this blog post: Apache (and other foundations) considered useful by Chris Aniszczyk.

That said, I also just use GitHub to host my personal open-source projects and I have no problem with libraries that are not backed by a foundation. In this case, you need to know what you do. We have experienced a case where we wanted to use a library claiming having to have an Apache 2 license in the Scout Framework. The Eclipse Fundation did check it and revealed that a part of the code was under GPL. This can harm your project if you include something like that in your application.

The role and mission of the Eclipse Fundation can change. A survey to solicit opinions about open source foundations and the general Eclipse community was launched earlier this month. I my opinion it is important that developers outside the Eclipse ecosystem take the occasion to say their opinion about the Eclipse Brand and the role of the foundation. Only this way, the foundation can improve itself. Please take time to fill the survey.

I see all the advantages you mentioned, but they are a matter of personal perception and will not convince every company management to release their base software to open source. So I'm glad you achieved it. Smile
